What should the Council do to slow down traffic?

We all unanimously agree we don't want speed bumps but what DO we want?

These are just some of the suggestions we've heard.  How do you feel about:

a) turning Ramsden Road into a 20mph zone?
b) having a raised bump on the junction of Oldridge Road and Ramsden Road?
c) a zebra crossing on the junction of Oldridge Road and Ramsden Road as there are several nurseries/schools nearby?
d) turning Ramsden Road into an access only road from 10pm to 6am to stop lorry drivers/delivery vans from using it during unsociable hours?
e) having illuminated smiley/unhappy faces monitoring speed?
f) moving the waitrose carpark entrance to the opposite side to ease congestion?

Do you agree or object to any of the above.  Have we missed anything?

We value your contribution and are open to your suggestions, no matter what they may be.

  1. We've heard that the smiley/unhappy faces speed monitoring signs are very effective and think that would be very helpful on the road to discourage folks who race down it.

Moving the Waitrose carpark entrance would ease congestion there, although that would affect traffic around that entire system of roads. Once you're east of Ramsden on Balham Grove, because of the one-way streets, you can't get back to Ramsden or any of the other streets on this "side" unless you drive down to the high street or go up to Nightingale and turn left to drop down. That might have an unintended consequence of creating more traffic as cars drive around to get to Ramsden, Nightingale Square, Chestnut Grove, etc.

  2. We can try that with electronic signs that light up with a 20mph speed restriction at the junctions (most accidents are at junctions). In addition painted 'speed ramps'I have seen in Putney may be better than the type they are now removing in Nightigale Lane - as residents have been complianing about the road noise of 'clunk' lorries and roars of speed up/ slow down action of cars and the pollution that causes is not good. Better if we can get the cars to do a steady slow(er) speed.
Waitrose can be a complete lock up in Saturdays, and perhaps an in/out drive may help congestion.
One option being tried in Kensington (Museum Road) is to make the entire road a pedestrian crossing. Although perhaps a bit impractical with all our parked cars. Holland has a much lower speed through residential areas, something we can only drean about with the traffic we have to put up with.

  3. Some residents have responded saying they are having problems leaving a comment so I've agreed to do it for them.

"Why can't the council turn Ramsden Road into a 20mph zone and enforce the new speed limit by fitting speed cameras so that those that speed get fined? Thats one way of getting them to slow down."

Thanks for your comment. If other residents have difficulties leaving a comment, please email us with your suggestion and we'll post it on this site so that everyone gets a chance to hear your point of view.

  5. I like the 20 mph limit, the smiling / sad faces and the zebra crossing but really any measure which makes the road better and safer for residents, especially children & older people, would be good. At the moment the road is an open invitation to boy & girl racers!

  6. We received this via email too...

Dear organising folk, thank you, I've followed the blog type link thing but it is far too modern for the likes of an old duffer like me.
I have written to the council suggesting a strictly enforced 20mph zone for Ramsden and other roads in our block, e.g. Endlesham, Oldridge and Balham Grove.
The roads between Tooting Town centre and Longly road are 20mph zones where as far as I know there are no schools nurseries or the same mix of elderly, disabled and young families as residents. So I would go for a residents only access but settle for the 20mph zone,
    many thanks,

    Thanks Chris!

  7. I spoke with the Council this morning because I was rudely awaken (again) by a fast moving large vehicle at 4.21am and couldn't go back to sleep. I want them gone!

I'd like the Council to stop vehicles from using Ramsden Road as a short cut period. But as the Council won't do that, I'd settle for resident only access between 10pm-6am.

Seriously, am I the only one that can hear these monsters?

  8. I've had the pleasure of meeting a neighbour whose informed me of the traffic just by the roundabout on Ramsden Road. Janet has the following to say:

Skip lorries and articulated lorries (they are much bigger than your average delivery van) do not skirt the roundabout but speed OVER it, which is a safety hazzard. Occasionally, single decker buses speed down Ramsden Road from Nightingale Lane to short cut onto balham high road. I have approached my MP informing him of the skip lorries etc speeding along Ramsden Road, 24 hours a day which as I am an old aged pensioner with mobility problem is very unnerving and unsatisfactory. I want the Council to do a survey to investigate for themselves just what I have to live through. However, they have to consider the prime time of when doing so. There is no point carry out the survey when traffic is not at it worst. Furthermore, the Council needs to monitor the noise levels of all vehicles as alot rev unnecessarily.

Many thanks to Janet for sparing the time to let us know how she feels.

  9. The traffic drives far too fast down Ramsden Road. My mother is coming to stay next week; she's in her 80s and I fear for her with the way some people drive. A 20 mph zone would be great, as would anything really that makes people drive carefully and respect those who live here. But not speed bumps.
